Power to Janis

Janis Baker Hydro Apprentice crop 2019

Former Opunake High School Student Janis Baker knew trades were her future but narrowing down what trade was made easier after a talk at school from Taranaki Futures General Manager Warwick Foy.

“I always like to present the wide range of pathways available to young people and try and connect them with the right organisation to find out more – the options are extensive, but finding the right fit takes time,” says Foy.

In Janis’s case, that was a connection to Angus Ryburn at industry training organisation Competenz.

“Angus put me onto a mechanical engineering apprenticeship vacancy with Trustpower where I get additional training in hydro electrical power generation which was something new to me. I was interested in the Air Force but when I saw this opportunity I jumped at it,” says Baker.

After being put through a long and involved interview Janis started with Trustpower’s New Plymouth based team in August last year and has not looked back.

“It’s pretty awesome – from the atmosphere of working with different people to the variety of work and different sites, I’ve landed on my feet,” says Baker.

Janis will be 22 when she’s finished her training and will not only have four years work experience under her belt, she’ll also have earnt while she’s learnt. Now that’s awesome.
